Monaco's van move stalls

Monaco say that they are unlikely to sign Andy van der Meyde.

Monaco say that they are unlikely to sign Andy van der Meyde.

The French side agreed a fee with Italian giants Internazionale for the Dutch winger, and Didier Deschamps held several talks with the player.

However, the two parties could not settle on the personal terms of a deal, with one of the sticking points being the length of the contract.

Van der Meyde only wanted a three-year deal but Monaco wanted to tie him down for four years, and this is thought to have been just one of the sticking points.

The Principality side now say that van der Meyde is unlikely to turn up at Stade Louis II and sign for Monaco.

"We found an agreement with Internazionale," said a Monaco statement. "But talks with the player deteriorated.

"It was complex and we could not settle the last details."

Monaco officials will now look at another midfielder, with Feyenoord's Romeo Castelen the latest target.
