Black Cats dealt Poom blow

Mart Poom is expected to miss Sunderland's tour to North America.

Sunderland's pre-season preparations have been dealt a blow with the news that goalkeeper Mart Poom is likely to miss the club's tour to North America.

The Estonian international has been suffering from a long-term knee injury that has ruled him out of competitive action since October, and has so far failed to shrug off the problem despite surgery in March.

The 33-year-old did not train with the Premiership new-boys as they reported back after their holidays on Tuesday, and is expected to remain in England whilst his team-mates fly out to Canada and United States next week.

Poom also missed Estonia's World Cup qualifier against Portugal last month in what was expected to be his comeback bow after suffering an infection.

Former Everton man Thomas Myhre had stepped up to the plate in Poom's absence as they secured the Championship crown last season.

However with the Norwegian having left the Stadium of Light new signing Kelvin Davis will be handed the opportunity to stake his claim for the number one shirt should Poom's fears be confirmed.
