Toon Forlan link played down

Diego Forlan's agent insists he knows nothing of any interest from Newcastle.

Diego Forlan's agent insists he knows nothing of any interest from Newcastle.

The Magpies are known to be scouring the world for at least one striker, but probably two would be closer to their requirements.

Craig Bellamy, Patrick Kluivert and Laurent Robert have all departed in the last month which leaves Graeme Souness's attacking options at an all-time low.

Captain Alan Shearer and Michael Chopra are the only fully fit forwards currently in Newcastle's first team squad, with Shola Ameobi already sidelined through injury.

Kieron Dyer could be an option, but Souness knows he needs reinforcements.

A host of players have been linked including Julio Baptista, Alan Smith, Tore Andre Flo, Christian Vieri, Mark Viduka and Chris Sutton.

However, Forlan is now understood to be the latest name coming under Souness's scrutiny.

Forlan flopped during his time at Manchester United and his Old Trafford career - which yielded just 10 league goals - came to and end last summer with a move to Villarreal.

Despite his problems at United, Forlan took little time in recapturing his form and he bagged 25 goals, which secured him a share of the European Golden Boot.

Despite the reported interest, Forlan's representative Daniel Bolotnikoff has told skysports.com that Newcastle have made no approach.

"We have not had any contact with Newcastle," he told skysports.com.

"As far as we know, they have not made an approach to the club either.

"Diego still has four years left on his current deal and is very happy with life in Spain and with Villarreal.

"He made a good season last time and he wants to do the same again.

"Obviously in football you never know and should the club and player receive a good offer then of course he would think about it, but that is not the case."
