Ewerthon told to leave

Ewerthon has stated Borussia Dortmund told him to leave the club.

Real Zaragoza's new signing Ewerthon has stated Borussia Dortmund told him it would be beneficial for him to leave the club.

Dortmund's financial situation has been well documented recently and the Bundesliga giants were keen to offload the 24-year-old's wages.

Ewerthon, who would have been forced to take a pay-cut to remain at Westfalenstadion, was informed by the club's sporting director Michael Zorc that they wanted to sell him.

"Unfortunately the situation in Dortmund was very difficult," explained the Brazilian.

"On the very first day of our training camp Michael Zorc approached me and said that it would help the club if I moved on.

"I could have carried on with Dortmund, but I would have had to accept reduced wages. BVB just don't have any money."

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied the club were forced to sell Ewerthon, but hinted they were not prepared to lose him for free next summer.

"We had to take the fact into consideration that he would have been available for nothing at the end of the season," said Watzke.
