Vieira: Real was not an option
Patrick Vieira has stated he was not going to join Real Madrid this summer.
Patrick Vieira has stated he was not going to join Real Madrid this summer following his £13.7 million move to Juventus. The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Liga giants over recent years, but Real were not in the running for his signature this season.
Vieira spoke to friends Zinedine Zidane and Lillian Thuram about the move but made the choice on his on whether to leave Arsenal after nine years at Highbury.
"I knew I will not go to Real. It was very close last year, but not this year," explained Vieira to L'Equipe.
"With Juve, it was clear. The club looks like me, its simplicity, its discretion, its power. I think it is a family club. It is the perfect club for me.
"Arsenal was nine extraordinary seasons, but at Juve, I reach a new level. There are moments you have to only think about you. This time I thought about me.
"We must not fool ourselves, the two parties took advantage: Arsenal and me. I did what I had to do. I talked with Lilian Thuram and Zizou, but I made the decision all alone."
Despite leaving Arsenal, Vieira has stated his relationship with manager Arsene Wenger will always remain strong for his support during the tough times in The Premiership.
"From now, a lot of things will be said and written about Arsene and me," added Vieira. "I know what I owe him and I will never thank him enough.
"He has always backed me, especially during the difficult moments. We will always remain in touch."
Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Pascal Cygan has hit out at Wenger for allowing Vieira to join Juventus.
The French tactician had stated he was looking to strengthen his Gunners side this summer in order to challenge Chelsea next term.
However, Cygan is confused as to why the club can allow Vieira to leave when they want to bring in world class talent.
The former Lille defender knows what quality is available in the market and is left wandering who will fill Vieira's boots at Highbury.
"I've heard people say that boss Arsene Wenger wants to sign two international class players," said Cygan.
"But if it means losing Pat for him, what the hell is the point?
"Patrick will leave behind a huge gap and I don't see who will be able to replace him.
"The training ground will be a sad place without him."
