Spurs see off Sundowns
Tottenham Hotspur defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 in Peace Cup Group B.
Tottenham Hotspur earned their first win in Peace Cup Group B with a 3-1 victory over South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.A brace from Spurs forward Robbie Keane and a second half strike from Fredi Kanoute gave the North Londoners the win in Suwon, South Korea, while Lerato Chabangu struck a consolation goal for Sundowns.
A wide open and entertaining contest saw chances at both ends, with former Coventry City and Sheffield United winger Peter Ndlovu looking particularly dangerous down the left for Sundowns.
Yet, it was Keane who broke the deadlock 11 minutes before half time, as the Irishman beat Sundowns' offside trap to latch on to Tom Huddlestone's ball before rounding goalkeeper Brian Baloyi and slotting home left footed for 1-0.
The White Hart Lane club then doubled their advantage when Teemu Tainio released Wayne Routledge clear on goal and after Baloyi stopped the winger's strike, Kanoute finished the rebound right footed for 2-0.
They soon made it three, as Keane took advantage of poor defending from Sundowns to latch on to Andy Reid's cross from the left and score his second goal of the match.
Chebangu soon replied for Sundowns after taking advantage of slack Spurs marking to beat goalkeeper Radek Cerny with his left foot.
The South Africans then finished the match as the stronger side, but saves from Cerny and some poor finishing let down Sundowns, as Spurs claimed the win.
The other match in Group B saw Spanish Primera Liga club Real Sociedad draw 0-0 with Argentine giants Boca Juniors in Busan.
