Chelsea new boy ready to fight

Shaun Wright-Phillips admits he is well aware of the competition at Chelsea.

Shaun Wright-Phillips admits he is well aware of the competition for places at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea new boy inked a five-year deal on Monday afternoon after The Premiership champions concurred on a £21 million fee with Manchester City.

Wright-Phillips will have to compete with the talent of Damien Duff, Arjen Robben and Joe Cole if he is to land a regular starting berth and the gifted schemer admits it will be a tough challenge.

''It's fine by me. I never expected to go anywhere and walk into the team to be honest with you,'' Wright-Phillips told Chelsea TV.

''Competition is healthy really and will help make me a better player.

''There's competition all over the park and me and Joe (Cole) have competitions when we're away with England and we get on like a house on fire.

''I'm happy as long as he's doing well and I suppose he'd be the same for me, as long as we're both in a winning team.''

When quizzed on his aspirations for the new campaign, Wright-Phillips revealed he joined Chelsea to win silverware but that the immediate aim was to win the faith of manager Jose Mourinho.

''It's a club that is going somewhere and they're winning things,'' he continued.

''I just want to win a lot of medals and Chelsea at the moment are doing that and will do for a long time.

''To try and cement a place and to be involved with the team as much as possible (is the aim) and to win medals and help Chelsea to win things.

''As I said I just want to play well for myself and the fans really and for the coaching staff.

''I'm really glad to be here and I've met a lot of the fans already and they've welcomed me with open arms and I cannot wait to play in front of them.

''Jose said he's looking forward to having me here and he can't wait to see me and he said a lot of the players would like to see me here too.''
