Schemmel links up with Hearts

Sebastien Schemmel has taken up a trial offer with Hearts after leaving Celtic.

French defender Sebastien Schemmel has taken up a trial with Hearts after leaving Celtic.

The French full back trained with Celtic last week, but he is now trying his luck with Hearts.

Schemmel has been without a club since leaving Portsmouth last year.

The 30-year-old played for Hearts in their 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough and he was one of several trialists to feature.

Julien Brellier, Roman Brednar, Michal Pospisil and Edgaras Jankauskas, as expected, all featured.

Another new name on the squad sheet was Arturas Rimkevicius - who scored two goals for FBK Kaunas on Tuesday to book them a UEFA Champions League tie with Liverpool.

Manager George Burley insists he liked the look of some of the trialists, but he would not specify which individuals impressed him most.

"I'm more than pleased, it was better than I could have hoped for," said Burley.

"We chopped and changed but there were some excellent individual performances.

"I'm not going down the road of speaking about individuals but there were some good performances from some of the signed players and some of the trialists."

Steve Lomas, also training with the club, was unable to play against Boro - but remains with Burley's squad.
