Jose delighted with Crespo

Jose Mourinho has expressed his delight at Hernan Crespo's return to Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho has expressed his delight at Hernan Crespo's return to Chelsea, saying he could not have bought a better striker.

The Argentinian spent last season on loan at Milan and was keen to remain in Italy for personal reasons, rather than not wanting to play for Chelsea.

Mourinho has done everything he can to smooth his return to England, and believes Crespo is now able to give his all to the Premiership champions.

The Blues have been linked with a number of big-name strikers over the summer, but the former Porto boss says he could not have bought a better marksman than Crespo.

"I'm so happy because we could not have got a better player than him," said Mourinho.

"I was delighted when he started training with us and he is now happy with Chelsea.

"He wants to stay and perform and we have no doubt he will do that because he is a very encouraging player and very different to Didier Drogba and Carlton Cole.

"Now he wants to prove himself in the Premiership."

Crespo was settled back in Italy after his year in Milan, where he helped them to the UEFA Champions League final and scored twice in the dramatic defeat to Liverpool.

Mourinho knew it would be tough to persuade Crespo to return to West London, and went out of his way to ensure the 30-year-old came back.

"I understood his desire to stay in Italy because it was not for sporting reasons.

"I spoke to him on his holidays for a few days in Sardinia. He's happy with his work and he's happy at Chelsea, which has changed a lot.

"I knew from the beginning from a personal point of view it would be better if he stayed in Italy. But at the same time I knew he could prove himself in England.

"He has scored in Argentina and in Italy for Milan. I do not think it will be difficult for him to score goals."

Crespo will get an early chance to face his old team-mates as Chelsea face Milan in Boston on Sunday as part of their pre-season tour of America.

Carlo Ancelotti's side decided to sign Christian Vieri and Alberto Gilardino after failing to reach an agreement with Chelsea over a longer deal for Crespo.
