Spurs win Peace Cup

Tottenham Hotspur won the Peace Cup after a 3-1 victory over Lyon in South Korea.

Tottenham Hotspur have won the Peace Cup after a fine 3-1 victory over French champions Lyon in Seoul, South Korea.

A Jeremy Berthod own-goal and fine first half brace from Robbie Keane gave Martin Jol's side the trophy in the Far East, as Lyon's consolation came from the penalty spot through substitute Hatem Ben Arfa in the second half.

Spurs looked the better side from start in the South Korean capital and they deservedly took the lead in fortuitous circumstances after seven minutes.

Wayne Routledge found Stephen Kelly on the right-hand side and his cross into Lyon's box deflected off the head of Berthod and past a helpless Gregory Coupet for 1-0.

Two minutes later, Spurs doubled their lead with a fine move, as Michael Carrick found Mido down the left flank.

The Egyptian played in a fine cross and Keane got in between two Lyon defenders to head past Coupet for 2-0.

Gerard Houllier's side tried to work their way back into the match, but Spurs goalkeeper Radek Cerny was equal to efforts from Sylvain Wiltord and Florent Malouda.

At the other end, Teemu Tainio forced Coupet into a routine save from his free kick before Andy Reid kept the Lyon keeper on his toes with a strike that flew just over the bar from the edge of the box.

The North Londoners would not be denied and in first half injury time, Mido got onto a Reid pass down the left before slipping a sublime first time cross to Keane at the far post and the Irishman finished with aplomb for a 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw Lyon create a couple of decent chances, with Chelsea target Michael Essien picking out the head of Lamine Diatta with his cross from the left, but Cerny made the diving save.

Lyon would score a consolation late on in the half, as Ledley King was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball in the Spurs box.

That allowed Ben Arfa to beat Cerny left footed from the penalty spot for 3-1.

The French champions then saw Pierre-Alain Frau miss the target after taking a fine pass from Ben Arfa while Sidney Govou tested Cerny with a solid right foot strike.

The match ended with Spurs substitute Dean Marney forcing Coupet to make a fine save from his free kick.

The Premiership side celebrated their Peace Cup success on Sunday, as the club claimed $2 million US (£1.15 million) for winning the pre-season tournament.
