Milan wasted a great early chance when Alberto Gilardino eluded the offside trap to sprint clear but the club's recent signing saw his shot trickle wide under pressure from a Chelsea defender.
Chances were at a premium, with a dangerous ball from Damien Duff being hastily cleared by Jaap Stam, while Cafu fired wide from 20 yards for Milan.
Chelsea's best chance of the first half arrived on 23 minutes when Joe Cole played Eidur Gudjohnsen into space. The Icelandic ace played the ball back for Cole but the midfielder scuffed his shot and Milan were able to clear.
Jose Mourinho made four changes at the break before being pressed into two more substitutions following injuries to William Gallas and Claude Makelele.
Drogba, who was one of the half time substitutes, broke the deadlock on 64 minutes when he powered into the penalty area before finishing delicately.
Milan had a goal disallowed on 70 minutes when Andrea Pirlo's free kick crashed off the bar and was turned in by Christian Vieri but the striker was adjudged to be offside.
Petr Cech saved low down from Gilardino before Chelsea raced down the opposite end with Duff having a skidding effort saved at the near post.
The Rossoneri nicked an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining after Rui Costa picked up a corner at the far post, shuffled towards the edge of the penalty area and curled a delightful shot inside the upright.
In the closing moments, Chelsea could have snatched the win after clever work from Drogba but Frank Lampard scooped his attempt over the bar.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough recovered from a 4-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon by drawing 0-0 with Real Betis.
Boro had George Boateng sent off against Sporting on Saturday but kept their full complement on the field against Betis before winning 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out.
