Wenger cool on Owen link

Arsene Wenger says it is unlikely he will move for Michael Owen.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says it is unlikely he will move for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen during this transfer window.

Real are rumoured to be ready to move Owen on this summer, with the England man likely to see his chances limited even further following the signings of Robinho and Julio Baptista.

Manchester United are purported to be leading the chase, but various reports had suggested Wenger was keeping a close eye on the situation.

Wenger has made just one signing this summer, Alexander Hleb, and is looking at reinforcing his squad - but Owen is unlikely to arrive at Highbury this summer.

"At the moment I am not looking for a striker," Wenger told Sky Sports following Arsenal's win over Porto in the Amsterdam Tournament.

"I am looking at other areas and we have not made any approach for Michael Owen."

Arsenal saw Chelsea wrestle the Premiership title away from them last term and Wenger is determined to mount a strong challenge in the new season.

"We were in a great position going into last term, after coming out of an unbeaten season, so we are not in a better position," added Wenger. "But we are in a position where our ambition and desire are as big if not bigger this time."
