Bothroyd blows Berlin chance
Jay Bothroyd has failed to earn himself a contract with Hertha Berlin.
Former Blackburn Rovers striker Jay Bothroyd has failed to earn himself a contract with Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin after an injury plagued trial spell in the German capital.The 23-year-old Perugia forward spent the last three weeks training with Falko Gotz's men but has now been informed he will not be given a contract at the Olympia Stadion.
The former Arsenal trainee has also drawn admiring glances from Premiership duo West Ham and Manchester City but has yet to secure his exit from his Italian employers.
Perugia are currently mired in financial difficulties and Bothroyd faces an uncertain future as the side may yet be relegated to Serie C due to their dire economic state.
Hertha managing director Dieter Hoeness revealed that the German side opted not to move for the striker after he failed to significantly develop during his time in Berlin.
"The first impression was positive," said Hoeness. "But he didn't show the improvement we had hoped for."
Hertha are now expected to turn their attention to Red Star Belgrade's Marko Pantelic, as they are keen to add a new centre forward to the squad after losing both Fredi Bobic and Ilhan Mansiz over the summer.
