Reiziger aiming high
Michael Reiziger wants Boro to set themselves the highest target possible.
Michael Reiziger wants Middlesbrough to set themselves the highest target possible in a bid to improve on last season's seventh place finish. The North East outfit sealed a spot in the Uefa Cup for their 2004/05 efforts, but the Dutch defender feels a place in next term's UEFA Champions League is not out of reach.
The former Barcelona and Ajax stopper believes a top-four finish is not beyond the realm of fantasy and that Steve McClaren's side can emulate Everton's example.
"We have a very tough start," explained Reiziger to Sky Sports News. "If we get good results in our first four matches then we can look forward.
"I think we've grown as a team, and hopefully we can take a shot at fifth or fourth place. We did very well [last season]. The highest rank in the club's history. Now we have to do better.
"I think we have to set a high target and we'll see after the beginning of the season if it's right or not. For the club it's better to go into the Champions League [than the Uefa Cup].
"We have a lot of young players; the experience they will get will help the club improve."
Boro tackle Liverpool in their Premiership opener and Reiziger feels The Reds will have the advantage after playing a number of competitive games already this summer.
"They have more rhythm in tough matches. It's different in friendly matches. They'll have a slight advantage," he added.
"The only thing is the group is fit. We have few injuries. Everyone is fresh. The public is behind us. Let's go after them."
