Phillips eyes goal glut

Kevin Phillips has vowed to prove his worth to Aston Villa this season.

Aston Villa striker Kevin Phillips has vowed to prove his worth to the side this season.

The summer signing from Southampton is keen to recapture the sort of form he showed at Sunderland when he first burst onto the Premiership stage.

Phillips is determined to get off the mark against Bolton in this weekend's season opener and he hopes the goals will flow this term.

"Any centre forward that signs for a new club, you're brought there to score goals," said Phillips.

"You want to play week in, week out, but ultimately you want to score goals. I want to walk off the pitch having scored the winning goal.

"That's what I've been brought in to do and I've managed to get off the mark quite early - in my first game - and I've added to that since. So I'm feeling more confident, fitter and sharper with every game.

"So it's no use me just turning it on in pre-season. I've got to do the business once the Premiership starts. If I can do that, I'm sure the supporters will take to me even more."
