City confirm Stelios bid

Manchester City have confirmed they have made a bid for Stelios Giannakopoulos.

Manchester City have confirmed they have made a bid for Bolton midfielder Stelios Giannakopoulos.

Bolton denied earlier on Saturday that any club had lodged a bid for the Greek international.

City boss Stuart Pearce is keen to bolster his squad and has made a move to try and bring Stelios to Eastlands.

Pearce has been frustrated in his attempts to sign Steed Malbranque from Fulham and he has turned his attentions to Stelios.

Stelios has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, but City are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by bringing him to the City of Manchester Stadium.

City see Stelios as the ideal replacement for Shaun Wright Phillips and they are waiting to see if their £1 million bid will be accepted by Bolton.

"We contacted Bolton today (Saturday) and made a substantial offer for the player and are awaiting a response," said City spokesman Paul Tyrell.

Stelios has only a year to run on his current contract and Bolton may decide to cash-in on him rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
