Woody delight at debut

Jonathan Woodgate has spoken of his relief at making his Real Madrid debut.

Jonathan Woodgate has spoken of his relief at making his Real Madrid debut, just a year after joining from Newcastle United.

The former Magpie played in the closing stages of Real's friendly against an MLS All-Star team on Tuesday and received a warm welcome from the club's supporters.

Woodgate always knew he would play football again, but will only learn whether his battles against injury will be worth it when he retires from the game.

"It's only the start. I'll only know when it's finally over when I'm 35 and I'm sat in Ibiza on a little beach just taking it easy," said Woodgate. "I was convinced I would play again.

"I wouldn't say I'm starting my career again, but obviously I have got to start playing again and prove myself. We'll see how it goes, but I'm confident.

"I don't know when I'll be in contention to start a game because it's the manager's [Wanderley Luxemburgo] decision.

"To be honest I don't care if they buy another centre half. I've been at clubs before where other centre halves have been bought and it hasn't bothered me."
