Forlan: I'm no flop
Villarreal striker Diego Forlan insists he was not a failure at Manchester United.
Diego Forlan insists he was not a failure at Manchester United as he prepares for a return to Old Trafford. The Uruguayan striker left United 12 months ago after failing to score goals, and play, on a regular basis for the Premiership club.
He was sold to Villarreal and responded to the challenge of consistent action by finishing the season as top scorer in La Liga.
Forlan also scored against Everton in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League qualifying victory which booked Villarreal's spot in the group phase.
In Thursday's draw, the fates conspired to hand Forlan a reunion with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after Villarreal were pitted in the same group as The Red Devils.
But while much of the focus of those autumnal fixtures will be on Forlan's record with United, he does not consider himself to have been a flop at Old Trafford.
"I was not a failure as such," Forlan told Kicker. "If you do not play, you cannot meet expectations.
"Coach Ferguson put me on the bench. Usually I came on as a substitute and was missing the continuity.
"I am not a 'joker'."
Forlan has not been deflated by his experience in The Premiership and is confident he can perform for a major club, if he is handed the opportunity again.
He added: "I continue to think myself capable of playing for a large club.
"But I am very content with Villarreal at present."
