Makaay injury fears

Roy Maakay is set to miss Holland's World Cup qualifier with a knee injury.

Bayern Munich striker Roy Makaay is set to miss his country's World Cup qualifying match with Armenia due to an injury he suffered while at Holland's training camp in Katwijk.

The 30-year-old striker, who has already scored six goals in three matches for his club this season, twisted his ankle after clashing with fellow international Theo Lucius on Wednesday.

A medical in Holland showed no serious damage but Makaay has decided to return to Germany for a second opinion from Bayern Munich doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.

It is not yet known whether he will be fit in time for Holland's match against Andorra next Wednesday.

"I don't have pain, but I can't fully stretch the knee and there is some liquid in it," he said.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted that the club is keen to extend Makaay's contract, which is due to run out in 2007.

"We are looking to talk to him in the near future in order to extend his spell by two more years," Rummenigge said.
