The Azzurri had to recover from the shock of going a goal down to win, with Fiorentina's Luca Toni the hero on the night with a superb hat-trick.

Vitaly Kutuzov stunned Italy on four minutes when firing Belarus into a shock early lead.

However, the lead proved short-lived as Toni drew Italy level with his first goal of the night two minutes later.

Toni gave Italy the lead on 14 minutes with his second of the contest.

Mauro German Camoranesi put Italy in firm control with his side's third right on the stroke of half time.

Toni wrapped up the win and completed his hat-trick ten minutes after the break to put Marcello Lippi's side on the verge of qualification.

Slovenia boosted their qualifying hopes with a 2-1 victory over Moldova.

Serghei Rogaciov gave Moldova a shock lead on the half hour mark, but Klemen Lavric drew Slovenia level two minutes after the break.

Slovenia secured all three points when Matej Mavric grabbed the winner on 57 minutes to move them level on points with second-placed Norway who were beaten by Scotland.
