Sven: I will not quit
Sven Goran Eriksson says he will not fall on his sword.
Sven Goran Eriksson can understand why fans are calling for his head, but says he will not fall on his sword. The Swedish tactician was left stunned by England's dire 1-0 defeat in Northern Ireland which left sections of the fans who had travelled over to Belfast calling for Eriksson's departure.
Eriksson admits the defeat is the low point of his career as England manager, but is confident his players will come back strong and secure safe passage to the World Cup finals.
"It is a low point, because it is a qualification game," the Swede said at a heated press conference. "We should not lose, we should not even draw, we should win, but we didn't and I am sorry and disappointed.
"I am sorry for the fans, travelling here and paying a lot of money and they should be seeing us playing better football and winning.
"If you lose against Northern Ireland I can understand that (criticism)," he added. "It is up to The FA, but I am not going to resign.
"I am going to try and make it right in October, win two games and qualify for the World Cup."
Eriksson still believes he has the full backing of his players.
"I think so, I have never had any signs to the opposite," he stated. "The attitude was better today than Denmark, but the result was worse today than Denmark.
"It is much worse to lose a qualification game 1-0 than a friendly 4-1.
"We still have it in our hands and it is up to us to get six points in October."
Wayne Rooney's nasty side reared its head at Windsor Park, as he was chastised by skipper David Beckham following a show at petulance towards the referee.
Eriksson admits it was disappointing to see Rooney react in the manner he did, but stressed the player is still key to England's future.
"It (taking Rooney off) was talked about," added the Swede. "But it would be a pity to take off such an important player who can win a game for you.
"He is still young and I hope he learns, but it is important to know he is an important player for us and we will not lose him."
