Porto coach Co Adriaanse has warned Benni McCarthy he will be making a mistake by joining West Ham United.McCarthy was close to moving to Upton Park before the close of the transfer window after agreeing terms with The Hammers.
But the deal collapsed at the 11th hour after Porto changed their minds about selling the South Africa international.
West Ham are expected to revive their interest in the striker in the New Year, with manager Alan Pardew eager to sign McCarthy.
The forward has expressed a willingness for the move to be completed but Adriaanse feels McCarthy would be wasting his talent by signing for The Hammers.
"With all due respect to West Ham, they are not a club for a player of his ability," said Adriaanse.
"If he leaves it has to be to a major club, like Arsenal, Man United or Chelsea.
"He's playing for the World Club Champions and a team that were recently champions of Europe."
