Rooney handed two-game ban

Man Utd striker Wayne Rooney has been hit with a two-game ban by Uefa.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been hit with a two-game UEFA Champions League ban by Europe's governing body.

The teenage forward saw red in the second half of The Red Devils' 0-0 draw with Villarreal last week, with his second booking following hot on the heels of his first caution.

The second caution was meted out after Rooney mockingly applauded referee Kim Milton Nielsen over his first booking.

Uefa have taken a dim view of the youngster's actions and banned him for United's next two matches with Benfica and Lille.

A statement issued by Uefa read: "It is beyond any doubt that Wayne Rooney committed several disciplinary offences, notably by taking two yellow cards resulting in a red card, as well as by displaying unsporting conduct.

"As a result, it is appropriate to impose a two-match ban for the reported misconduct of Wayne Rooney."

United have until midnight on Friday to lodge an appeal.
