More injuries for Ajax

Ajax striker Angelos Charisteas has joined an ever-lengthening injury list.

Ajax striker Angelos Charisteas has joined an ever-lengthening injury list at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The Greece international was hurt during Ajax's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.

Charisteas was injured in a challenge with Kolo Toure, which saw the Ajax man leave the field with a head covered in blood.

He suffered concussion in the clash and will miss Ajax's game against Sparta Rotterdam in De Eredivisie this weekend.

Wesley Sneijder is another player to be absent for that game as he requires at least a further week on the sidelines with a hamstring complaint.

The injuries for Charisteas and Sneijder merely add to coach Danny Blind's current woes as he is also without Hatem Trabelsi, Hedwiges Maduro and Mauro Rosales.

Meanwhile, Ajax have confirmed that rookie goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer has been handed a new contract.

Vermeer revealed in August that he had agreed terms with the Dutch giants and he is now contracted to Ajax until 2008.
