Newcastle warned off Anelka

Fenerbahce insist that Newcastle will not be signing Nicolas Anelka in January.

Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka will not be returning to England to join Newcastle United, according to the Turkish club.

Magpies boss Graeme Souness tried to sign the player in the summer, and despite managing to capture Michael Owen and Albert Luque, is keen to bring in another striking option in the January transfer window.

It seems unlikely that Newcastle would have the money to spend on another big name forward, but Anelka has suggested that he could be tempted into a move to St James' Park, and Souness has been an admirer for a long time.

Anelka has a reputation as a player who is hard to manage and he has been at several clubs already in his career, but he has settled in well at Fenerbahce, who have dismissed the transfer speculation.

"Anelka is happy at Fenerbahce," said the vice-president of the club Nihat Ozdemir.

"Our fans love him and we want to be successful in the UEFA Champions League, so it is not possible we would sell him to Newcastle."
