Wome: Eto'o is a liar
Pierre Wome has branded Samuel Eto'o a liar after Cameroon's World Cup exit.
Pierre Wome has branded Samuel Eto'o a liar for stating that he wanted to take the penalty kick that cost Cameroon their place in the World Cup finals and has admitted that he is worried about his family's safety after the miss. The Internazionale midfielder has reiterated his earlier comments regarding the taking of the fateful spot-kick that allowed Ivory Coast to snatch a place in Germany.
He failed to score from the spot when Cameroon were handed a dramatic injury-time lifeline against Egypt at the weekend and was shocked to hear his team-mate say that he wanted the responsibility.
Eto'o went on record after the 1-1 draw as saying that he was keen to take the penalty, but Wome was adamant that he should take it as he would score.
"Leaving aside the tone of his statement, everything that he has said is lies," Wome explained.
"Nobody wanted to take the penalty, not the captain [Eto'o] or anyone else, because we knew that we may miss.
"I feel very bad. I tried to call Eto'o, but I only heard his answering machine. I arrived late at Appiano because I was waiting for his call."
Wome was pleased that several members of the Cameroon squad had telephoned him, but he explained that he was still worried about his family after the costly miss.
"Some of my team-mates from the team have called, others have not," he said. "Here at Inter, people have already come to speak to me about it and even [Massimo] Moratti [the club president] rang and told me that life goes on.
"I am not afraid because I have a strong character, but I am worried about my family."
