Cunningham quits Irish

Republic of Ireland skipper Kenny Cunningham has announced his international retirement.

Kenny Cunningham has announced his international retirement following Republic of Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Ireland saw their hopes of going to Germany next summer ended after they could only manage a goalless draw at home to Switzerland on Wednesday.

The Birmingham defender now believes the time is right to quit the international scene at the age of 34.

"It is the end of the road for me, without a doubt," said Cunningham.

"I don't want to dwell on it too much on what is a hugely disappointing night for the entire group," added the Birmingham City defender.

"I feel for our supporters and everybody who has got behind the team and I am sorry we have come up short."

Matt Holland has also admitted he is considering his international future as he knows he will not have the chance to play in another World Cup finals with Ireland.

"At the start of the next campaign I'll be 32, and by the time the European Championships come round I'll be 34," said Holland.

"I don't know. It's a little bit premature to be thinking about it at this precise moment. I'll have to sit back and think about that one."
