Jol: King stays at the back

Martin Jol admits Ledley King will be staying as a centre back for Tottenham Hotspur.

Martin Jol admits Ledley King will be staying as a centre back for Tottenham Hotspur, despite the player's solid midfield showing for England.

King was deployed in a holding role in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Poland and slotted in comfortably in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

The Spurs captain concedes that, if he wants to be part of England's World Cup side, he will have to focus on being a midfielder.

But Tottenham boss Jol has no intention of changing King's club position as he feels he already has sufficient quality in midfield.

"You shouldn't forget Ledley played in that role for Spurs two years ago and he did well," Jol told Sky Sports News.

"But we have good players in that position. Michael Carrick, for example, is playing a similar role in our team and doing well.

"It was nice to see one of our players doing a similar role for England and I was proud of him."

Jol feels King is perfectly equipped to continue in that role for his country, despite the fact England play in a different system to Spurs.

The Dutchman added: "It depends on what you want. Normally, they play in a different style.

"If they play with three midfield players, like Beckham did the other day, you can do that but it depends on the system, it depends on the players.

"The English system they played with Rooney is a bit different. They played with Lampard, King and Rooney in the hole off the strikers so it is a different system with England.

"The players know this system and Ledley was as if he has played there every match."
