Robbo to serve three-game ban

West Brom's appeal against Paul Robinson's red card at Fulham has been withdrawn.

West Bromwich Albion have withdrawn their appeal against Paul Robinson's sending off against Fulham.

Robinson was shown the red card in the final minute of extra time as The Baggies beat their Premiership rivals 3-2 in the Carling Cup.

The defender was dismissed by referee Andy D'Urso for clashing with Fulham centre half Zat Knight at the side of the pitch.

Knight appeared to barge Robinson into the advertising hoardings and the Baggies player responded by seemingly kicking out at his opponent.

Baggies boss Bryan Robson felt the red card was unfair and the club initially lodged an appeal with The Football Association concerning the violent conduct verdict.

"I just find it unbelievable," said Robson after the game.

"Why referees don't understand something like that, I don't know.

"Robbo was smashed into the boards so how is he supposed to react? He's not going to say 'sorry, I got in your way'.

"It's just incredible you can send a player off like that for reacting."

But, just a couple of hours after submitting the appeal, The FA have revealed that Robinson has withdrawn his protest.

It means Robinson will now serve an immediate three-match suspension which rules him out of games against Newcastle, West Ham and Everton.

Unlike many of his managerial contemporaries, Robson admits he has no qualms in West Brom making progress in the Carling Cup.

He added: "The Premiership is the main aim for us to do well in, but I do believe, if you can have a good cup run in one of the competitions, I don't think that gets in the way of your league performances."
