Beckham red card rescinded
David Beckham's red card at the weekend against Valencia has been rescinded.
David Beckham's red card at the weekend against Valencia has been rescinded following an appeal. The England captain saw red on Sunday with just three minutes remaining of Real's costly 2-1 defeat to Valencia.
Beckham was first booked for protesting a foul given against team-mate Raul and then seconds later yellow turned to red after he sarcastically applauded referee Arturo Dauden Ibanez.
Like Wayne Rooney, who did almost the exact same thing against Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League, Beckham was dismissed but Spain's ruling body have decided to reverse the decision.
Real had claimed that Beckham's gesture was not sarcastic and it would appear their observations concur with those of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), with the midfielder now available for Wednesday's game against Deportivo La Coruna.
"The clapping took place when the player's back was turned to the referee and when he was returning to his position on the pitch," said the Committee.
"Although the action is worthy of reproach it was not done in direct confrontation and is seen as part of his original protest.
"Neither the incidents themselves nor the referee's report suggest that there was an intention to insult or slight the referee."
