DFB Cup round-up

Bayern Munich make hard work of minnows in the DFB Cup.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich overcame tough opposition to book their place in the third round of the DFB Cup with a 1-0 away win.

In-form midfielder Michael Ballack scored the only goal of the game as Bayern struggled against second division side Erzgebirge Aue. Ballack's fine header from eight yards secured a narrow victory for Felix Magath's team.

Stuttgart's poor start to the season continued as they lost 3-2 away at second division Hansa Rostock.

Thomas Hitzlsperger scored early on for the visitors but goals from Marcel Schied, Rade Prica and Magnus Arvidsson turned the game around.

Danijel Ljuboja's late strike wasn't enough to spark a comeback, and Stuttgart's manager Giovanni Trapattoni remains underpressure.

MSV Duisburg were another Bundesliga team to be dumped out by opposition from the lower leagues. Promotion-chasing 1860 Munich were the victors, 3-2, as they caused more problems for underfire Duisburg coach Norbert Meier.

Elsewhere, Hamburg defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 to continue their fine run of form and Hertha Berlin beat Borussia Mochengladbach 3-0.

FSV Mainz were lucky to escape with a victory as they avoided embarrassment with a penalty shootout victory against third division VFL Osnabruck.

Armenia Bielefeld secured a win against Energie Cottbus, and in an all second division tie Kickers Offenbach triumphed against Karlsruher SC.

In the Tuesday night games Schalke were thrashed 6-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt, suffering their worst defeat in a decade.

Werder Bremen beat northern rivals VFL Wolfsburg on penalties and Kaiserslautern won 4-2 away at third division side Rot-Weiss Erfurt.

Bottom of the Bundesliga Nurnberg put their poor league form behind them to triumph over second division Dynamo Dresden 3-0 and Hannover 96 returned home victorious after their trip to 2004 runners-up Alemannia Aachen.

In two Bundesliga Zwei ties, Uterhaching beat Saarbrucken 2-1 after extra time whilst Freiburg thrashed Braunschweig 4-1.

Meanwhile second division table-toppers VFL Bochum suffered a surprise 4-0 drubbing at the hands of third division St. Pauli.
