Fergie praises Smith

Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Alan Smith for sacrificing himself for the team.

Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on Alan Smith for sacrificing himself for Manchester United.

The former Leeds United striker has been asked to play out of position in midfield by Sir Alex Ferguson and the England man has not batted an eyelid.

Fergie felt Smith could handle playing in the middle of the park due to his mental attributes and feels his decision has been vindicated.

"I've been very impressed with Alan," explained Ferguson. "He's an outstanding person who has a strong character and a real determination.

"There are some of the characteristics which have led me to liken him to Roy Keane - and that is why we were prepared to try him in the midfield role.

"The way Alan has taken the job encourages me that he can do it. He's a fantastic professional and never complains about being moved out of position.

"He doesn't seem to cross Alan's mind that he is sacrificing himself for a role in the team and I like that attitude."
