Doblas blast at Betis
Toni Doblas is adamant he should not have been dropped by Real Betis.
Toni Doblas is adamant he should not have been dropped from the Real Betis team and points to his record last season when he appeared in virtually every game as the club won the Copa del Rey and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. The outspoken goalkeeper is furious that he has been castigated for making one mistake in the 4-0 defeat at Chelsea last month and claimed that if he did not make any errors then he would be playing for a better club.
After losing to the Blues, Doblas went on to concede ten goals in his side's next three league games and saw Pablo Contreras take his place between the sticks and keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory against Jose Mourinho's side in the second game in Spain.
Despite his under-study's impressive display, Doblas is in no doubt that he should have stayed in the side and even believes that there are people who are glad that he has been shown up.
"The numbers are there for everyone to see," he said.
"I have conceded many goals, but the team qualified for the Champions League and won a lot of league games when I was playing last season.
"You have to look at the numbers and see who has won more points.
"People were hoping that something like that would happen.
"I do not mean people within the club, but I know that some fans were saying that I looked like a handball keeper.
"I tell everyone that questions me that I know that I will make one mistake per season. I was only upset because it happened in such an important game at such a crucial time.
"But I am only human and if I did not make any mistakes then I would not be here, I would be playing for one of the biggest clubs.
"Being left out of the side is just one of the pot-holes of being a professional footballer, but I am not going to cry about it and I am sure that if I work hard I will win my place back.
"I am not going to say what I really think, because I think you need to have respect for the coach and my team-mates.
"I am not going to comment because I would probably say more than I should do.
"The only thing I know is that I am not playing and all I can do is prove in training every day that I am good enough and be ready when the chance comes.
"I have been here for many years with these players, who are more like brothers to me than team-mates.
"Contreras deserves respect because he is a great professional. I hope that this situation makes me a better player and a better person. Now you really find out who is behind you and those who are not."
