Ferdinand earns late point

Anton Ferdinand scored deep into injury-time to salvage a last-gasp draw at Tottenham.

Anton Ferdinand scored deep into injury-time to salvage a last-gasp 1-1 draw for West Ham United against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Spurs could have moved fifth in The Premiership with a win and looked like claiming the three points for much of the game thanks to Mido's first half goal.

However, with the points seemingly in the bag, a late corner from the right sailed over Paul Robinson and Ferdinand headed home from close-range for an unlikely share of the spoils.

Spurs began the brighter of the sides with Edgar Davids going close with a long-range drive from distance that clipped Hayden Mullins and flew out for a corner.

The visitors responded and Mullins had a drive of his own that floated just wide, while Yossi Benayoun saw a low shot spin wide.

However, West Ham's good work was undone after 16 minutes when Mido opened the scoring with a well-taken header for his fourth Premiership goal of the campaign.

Defender Michael Dawson floated nothing more than a hopeful ball on goal and the Egyptian striker seized on Shaka Hislop's decision to come off his line by heading over the keeper into the empty net.

Tempers began to fray and ex-Spur Teddy Sheringham took exception to a lunge by Davids that resulted in both players receiving yellow cards by referee Alan Wiley.

Alan Pardew's side continued to cause problems without testing Robinson. This time Marlon Harewood redirected the ball wide of the former Leeds keeper, but also the far post.

West Ham did have the ball in the net late on in the half, but Mark Noble's effort was rightly disallowed for offside after he connected with Sheringham's pass before firing home.

Spurs came close twice to doubling their advantage after half time, but Mido firstly glanced a header wide from Teemu Tainio's cross before Hislop closed down Robbie Keane's overhead kick.

West Ham should have levelled matters after 67 minutes, however Robinson somehow kept Sheringham's close-range effort out from a right wing corner.

Noble's corner eluded a host of players in the middle leaving Sheringham free to smash home, although he did not connect properly and Robinson superbly palmed the effort away to safety.

Following a bout of pressure from the visitors, Spurs nearly added a second through Jermaine Jenas.

The former Newcastle man cleverly cut the ball back onto his left foot just inside the area, but saw his curling shot flash just wide of Hislop's right-hand post - a miss that would prove costly.

West Ham had one final chance to level matters and Pardew's men took full advantage with Ferdinand heading home from close-range - stunning the majority of the White Hart Lane crowd in the process.
