Recoba refutes quit reports

Alvaro Recoba denies that he has retired from the Uruguayan national team.

Internazionale forward Alvaro Recoba has moved to dismiss reports that he has retired from international football following Uruguay's World Cup exit to Australia.

The South American nation lost their crucial play-off over two legs as Guus Hiddink led his side to a penalty shoot-out victory last week, and reports in the Italian media suggested that Recoba had called time on his international career as a result.

In the last 12 months Recoba has endured a somewhat fractious relationship with his national side after refusing a call-up in January, but the Nerazzurri star says he is committed to Uruguay despite their World Cup heartbreak.

"It's something crazy what I have read in an Italian newspaper," Recoba told Ultimas Noticias.

"Now many parts of the Uruguayan press is calling me to know if it's true what has been said there and I have answered that I have not resigned from the national team.

"It's really crazy to say that I have reigned from the national team, I have even asked coach Jorge Fossati to remain in his position so how am going to resign if I have asked him to stay?

"Now what we have to try and do is to forget as soon as possible about what has happened against Australia.

"It's not going to be easy because all the Uruguayans thought that we were going to Germany 2006 but we have to think in the future."
