PSV reach last 16

Philip Cocu and Jefferson Farfan put PSV Eindhoven into the knockout stages.

Goals from Philip Cocu and Jefferson Farfan put PSV Eindhoven through to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as they overcame Fenerbahce at the Philips Stadion.

The match was a scrappy affair, and was decided by a goal in each half, a result which confined Fener to the bottom of Group E. Cocu headed home a free kick on 14 minutes and Farfan sealed victory with a goal on 85 minutes.

After a cagey start from both teams, PSV had a good shout for a penalty turned down. A corner from Farfan appeared to hit the hand of Fenerbahce player Tuncay Sanil but referee Eric Poulat gave nothing despite the home side's protests.

The Turkish side then almost took a surprise lead when a cross from Sanil was headed just over his own net by defender Alex.

The deadlock was broken as Cocu rolled back the years and gave the Dutch fans something to cheer about. Farfan drifted in a free kick with his right foot and the 35-year-old rose unmarked to head home the opening goal.

Nicolas Anelka looked lively as ever for Fener and he forced Heurelho Gomes into a save, as the Turks looked to bounce back. The former Arsenal striker drifted in from right to left before turning and firing in a shot on goal, which bounced just in front of Gomes as he turned it behind for a corner.

PSV almost had a second after smart link-up play with only a fine save from Volkan Demirel denying them. A long throw was hooked on by Jan Venegoor of Hesselink and Farfan fired in shot which was saved by Demirel.

Fener's attacks were largely restricted to long range efforts. Anelka almost embarrassed Gomes with a mis-hit cross from an acute angle and, just before half time, Stephen Appiah dragged a 20 yard shot wide.

The second half began, just as the first had, with both sides cancelling each other out in midfield, and chances were few and far between.

Robert had the first real opportunity, as once again PSV's widemen caused Fener problems. He deftly cut inside and fired in a shot, which was blocked by Demirel.

The enigmatic Anelka began to fade out of the game as the second half progressed becoming more and more disenchanted with his colleagues. Eventually he was substituted for Mehmet Yozgatli on 65 minutes.

Fenebahce were desperate for a way back into the game and were convinced they had a penalty on 69 minutes when a cross struck the arm of Timmy Simons. The Turks were incensed and Serkan Balci earned himself a yellow card for his protests.

With a victory guaranteeing PSV's progress, the Dutch side were happy to sit back. The onus was on the visitors to push for an equaliser, but for all their possession, they failed to create a gilt-edged chance.

Indeed, it was PSV who killed the game off with their second.

A long free kick was headed down by Hesselink, and Farfan found himself in acres of space and smashed the ball past the onrushing keeper.

As the match petered to a finish, Turkish tempers started to fray. A high challenge from Cocu on Balci brought the teams together, with Cocu receiving a yellow card for his tackle.

However, it was largely irrelevant as, a few minutes later, the referee blew for full time sending Eindhoven crazy and Guus Hiddink's side through to the last 16.
