Carlisle United have released former Newcastle midfielder Jamie McClen.

Carlisle United have released former Newcastle midfielder Jamie McClen.

The 26-year-old joined The Cumbrians after having made more than 20 appearances for the Magpies first team, although he has subsequently struggled to make his mark on a strong Carlisle midfield.

"Jamie has been a model professional and a pleasure to have around the club," manager Paul Simpson told the club's official website.

"He has worked hard with us but we have to be honest and say that there are other players above him in the pecking order at the moment.

"We are releasing him now so that it gives him more opportunity to get himself sorted out elsewhere."

McClen made just four appearances for The Cumbrians, with his only start coming against Burnley in the Carling Cup.
