Adler signs new Bayer deal

Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler has committed his future to the club.

The promising shot-stopper, who was linked with a possible move to Arsenal in the summer, put pen-to-paper on a new contract extension on Monday, keeping him at the BayArena until 2009.

The 20-year-old has spent this season on the Bayer bench as understudy to Hans-Jorg Butt, but is widely expected to succeed the veteran when his contract expires in July.

Bayer coach Michael Skibbe was happy to secure Adler's services, and remains confident that he can fulfil his potential.

"We are delighted that Rene has decided to stay with us. There is no doubt that he has a great future at Bayer," he commented.

Meanwhile, contract negotiations with midfielder Clemens Fritz have been put on hold until January after the 25-year-old failed to meet a deadline set by the club.

"As a result we have withdrawn our offer for the time being and will be looking at the market for alternatives," said director of sport Rudi Voller.
