Mellberg blasts Blues rumours

Aston Villa captain Olof Mellberg has rubbished claims he could join Birmingham.

Aston Villa captain Olof Mellberg has rubbished claims he could join fierce rivals Birmingham City.

Mellberg has been linked with a January exit from Villa Park, amid rumours he is unhappy at the club.

The Sweden international has spent four-and-a-half years with Villa and it has been suggested that Mellberg wants a fresh challenge.

Speculation has even linked Mellberg with a switch to Villa's local foes Birmingham, but the commanding centre half has hit out at the rumours.

"It is bull**** that I am tired of being at Villa," Mellberg told Sportbladet.

"The reason that some clubs have shown an interest is that it's going well for me and nothing else.

"I can't imagine that Birmingham have shown an interest in me and neither have I for them."

Mellberg has made 170 appearances for Villa since his arrival and he has graduated to the role of captain under David O'Leary.

He is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, but could return for the first game in the New Year against West Brom.
