Spurs win Mido battle

Spurs striker Mido will delay linking up with Egypt for the African Cup of Nations.

Tottenham Hotspur's request for Mido to delay his arrival at the African Cup of Nations has been accepted by the Egyptian Football Association.

Mido had been keen to postpone linking up with the Egyptian squad for the tournament which starts in mid-January.

He wanted to be available for Spurs' Premiership clash against Liverpool on January 14, which falls within the time-frame when Egypt could demand his services.

But after talks between Tottenham and the Egyptian FA, it has been agreed that Mido can fly out to his homeland on January 15.

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata was happy to make the compromise and Spurs have offered their gratitude for being allowed to keep Mido.

"We are appreciative of the understanding of the Egyptian FA," Tottenham's sporting director Damien Comolli told the club's official website.

"They have taken into account both the interests of the players and our club.

"There was an excellent spirit of co-operation."

The deal means Mido will also be available for the Premiership meeting with Manchester City on January 4, although he will miss the FA Cup tie against Leicester City.

He will travel to Africa for Egypt's friendly against Nigeria on January 9 before returning to England for the encounter with Liverpool.

His absence from Martin Jol's squad then depends on Egypt's progress in the African Cup of Nations, with the group phase concluded by the end of January and the final on February 10.
