Nigeria ace Kanu is struggling to be fit for the start of the African Cup of Nations due to a head injury. The West Brom attacker suffered a depressed fracture to the side of the head during the club's FA Cup third round tie with Reading.
Kanu had been given permission to play in the game by Nigeria, who were happy to allow the former Arsenal man to join up late for the African Cup of Nations.
But he could now miss the start of the competition as his injury is expected to take two to three weeks to heal.
West Brom boss Bryan Robson offered his sympathy to The Super Eagles, who he praised for allowing Kanu to stay at The Hawthorns.
"I feel a little bit sorry for the Nigeria officials because they have been very fair to us," said Kanu.
"It's unusual for an international team to be as flexible as they have been and, unfortunately for them and for us, Kanu has suffered this injury.
"I just want to thank the Nigerian FA and their manager for being so fair to us and allowing him to stay.
"We will always try to be fair with them in the future."
Nigeria's first game of the African Cup of Nations is on January 23 against Ghana.
Meanwhile, Robson has confirmed that Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu is undergoing a medical and should complete a move to West Brom on Wednesday.
