Swindon close on Smith

Swindon Town are close to agreeing a deal with experienced midfielder Paul Smith.

Smith has been training with Swindon this week having started the campaign with Walsall and is now in talks about a permanent deal.

Swindon boss Iffy Onuora is well aware of Smith's capabilities having played with him at Gillingham, and is confident the player could help his side beat the drop from League One.

"Paul has been training with us today and he is someone who I know well,'' Onuora told the club's official website.

''I have spoken to both Paul and his agent over recent days and hopefully we can sort something out for him to join us.

''I think he won the player of the year award seven years out of eight when I was there!

''Should we manage to sort out a deal, he will be one who will lead from the front and will lead by example.''
