Shearer's trophy agony
Alan Shearer is gutted that Newcastle have not won a trophy while he has been there.
Alan Shearer has admitted that Newcastle have never been good enough to win anything during his near ten-year spell at the club, as Graeme Souness admits he fears they will again fail to qualify for Europe.Despite the joy of equalling Jackie Milburn's 200-goal record for The Magpies, Shearer is still suffering to come to terms with the lack of success at St James' Park during his spell there.
"I have been expecting silverware to arrive here for the last nine years," said Shearer.
"But we've never been good enough to deserve to win anything. It is as simple as that.
"There have always been better teams. We have had a go but when it matters most we have come up short.
"I thought last year was the closest we got to achieving something when we got to the Uefa Cup quarter finals. I thought we had a chance to go on and win that trophy but we were ravaged by injuries and suspensions at the wrong time."
The Magpies have been big spenders in the transfer market over the years, but it has still not been enough to bring that much sought-after trophy back to Tyneside.
Shearer added in FourFourTwo Magazine that injuries have been the main reason for their poor season so far this year.
"The main reason is that again we have not been good enough and the injuries we have had have been enormous.
"We spent £10million on Albert Luque and he picks up a serious injury after only a few games. But we are improving all the time and the time to judge the manager is when everyone is fit.
"Everyone supports him and there isn't a problem. We know we have to aim high this season but whether we get there remains to be seen."
Manager Graeme Souness is feeling the heat as his side continue to struggle this season, and he fears that injury problems will stop them qualifying for Europe.
"Finishing in the top six will be very hard unless we enjoy a great deal of luck," said Souness.
"We have honest players who will give everything but on some days that won't be enough. So it's going to be a hard season."
