Bonner forced to quit
Former Oldham midfielder Mark Bonner has announced his retirement.
Former Oldham midfielder Mark Bonner has announced his retirement.Bonner had spent the best part of the last two years at Boundary Park but earlier in the season announced that he was leaving the League One club after suffering a serious injury.
The former Blackpool and Cardiff schemer has now confirmed officially that he is hanging up his boots having failed to sufficiently recover from a smashed forearm, which is held together by a plate and nine pins.
''I have been in the game for 16 years and I can look back on quite a lot of happy memories,'' Bonner told the club's official website.
''When I went back to see the surgeon for my last check-up he told me that it was better that I didn't play again because if I fell on my arm I could end up with a permanent disability.
''If anything happened I could find myself in the position of not being able to use it again.''
Meanwhile, Oldham boss Ronnie Moore has confirmed that he is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, as he looks for competition for current number one Chris Day.
''The goalkeeping position is so important, and I'd like to find somebody who will really push him as our number one,'' Moore told the Oldham Evening Chronicle.
''It's not because I want Chris out of the side. In fact there have been times this season when he has kept us in games.
''But there's only room for one keeper in a team, so the harder you can push him, the more you might squeeze out of him.''
