Unsworth departs Gigg Lane

Bury's longest-serving player has left the club by mutual consent.

Bury's longest-serving player Lee Unsworth has left the club by mutual consent.

After giving The Shakers six years of service, totalling 175 appearances, Unsworth has agreed to a termination of his contract with the club.

The 32-year-old has been forced to cut his professional career short by a persistent groin injury, and manager Chris Casper admitted that he was sad to see the player go.

"It is unfortunate for Lee and Bury Football Club that he has had to make this decision, but I also think this is the right decision for Lee," explained Casper.

"As my two predecessors have said on many occasions, Lee Unsworth is the model professional footballer and it's very sad that he has had to make this decision."

Unsworth made a huge contribution during his time at Gigg Lane, scoring six goals in addition to his consistent performances since moving from Crewe in the 1999/00 season.

As one player leaves, another could be set to come into the Bury fold, after David Hannah agreed to a trial with The Shakers.

Former Celtic man Hannah is currently under contract at St Johnstone, but he could join Bury if he impresses boss Casper.
