Rio empathises with Campbell

Sol Campbell has also received the support of England team-mate Rio Ferdinand.

Sol Campbell's England team-mate, Rio Ferdinand, has followed the lead of PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor by issuing his support to the troubled Arsenal man.

Following a tumultuous week, in which he took four days' leave from Gunners training, Campbell's future has been the subject of great speculation.

But Ferdinand, who has refused to become embroiled in the hearsay, believes Campbell will soon be in a position to answer the doubters.

"No-one knows what's going on to be honest," Ferdinand said. "Lots of people are passing judgement and giving their opinion on the situation.

"His football will do the talking at the end of the day and when he wants to come out and say what is happening or not happening he will do that."

Ferdinand admits he can empathise with Campbell after the latter suffered what appears to be a crisis of confidence.

But the Manchester United centre back, himself the butt of criticism at times this season, has paid tribute to Campbell's enduring qualities.

"I will leave it to him to make his mind up and come back and play football the way he always has," added Ferdinand.

"It doesn't matter who you are, no-one is immune to a lack of confidence.

"Sol is a fantastic player, he's been consistent over the years, he's proved that to himself and I'm sure he will continue to do that."
