Alan Smith has successfully undergone surgery on the horrific injury he picked up against Liverpool.The Manchester United ace sustained a broken leg and dislocated ankle in trying to block a free kick from John Arne Riise in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Anfield.
Smith has been ruled out for the rest of the season and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
United revealed Smith underwent surgery on Sunday and that he will stay in hospital for a couple of days.
"The operation was a success," said a United spokesman.
"Alan will remain in hospital for a couple of days, and the leg will be in plaster for several weeks.
"Everybody connected with the club is wishing Alan well for a speedy recovery."
