Shrews sign young talent
Shrewsbury Town have signed club trainee Steve Leslie to a one-year contract.
Shrewsbury Town have signed club trainee Steve Leslie to a one-year professional contract at Gay Meadow. The 18-year-old was the only second-year scholar to earn a professional deal from the Shropshire outfit.
Five other youngsters in Dan Griffiths, Jamie Haynes, Ian Havard, Tom Sparey and Damien Stevens have all missed out on a contract as a result.
Shrews boss Gary Peters believes left-sided winger Leslie has what it takes to become a real asset for the League Two club.
"Steve has done well and played at left back a lot in the reserves, but he's more of a left winger and is very exciting at times," Peters told the club's official website.
"He was on the bench the other day at Carlisle and in the later stages of the season and if we get the required points, there's a great opportunity to play the younger kids and Steve is one of those kids.
"I'd like to see how he does in the first team.
"At a small club like ourselves, it's important that we produce our own players and in the past, we've had the likes of Jamie Tolley, Dave Edwards and Joe Hart and it's important that we continue to do that."
