Forlan denies offside charge
Villarreal's Diego Forlan denied he was offside after a controversial goal against Rangers.
Villarreal goalscorer Diego Forlan denied he was offside after a controversial second goal in the 2-2 draw with Rangers. With the score at 1-1 in the first half, Forlan exploited the offside rules to grab a second away goal for the visitors at Ibrox.
Juan Roman Riquleme floated a header in to the box which Gonzalo Rodriguez pulled down, at which point Forlan was clearly offside.
However the former Manchester United striker then got back level before finishing the chance for the Yellow Submarines.
Forlan denied suggestions that his goal should not have stood after the UEFA Champions League clash.
"On the goal I was offside I know that, but I came back and tried to be onside," Forlan told Sky Sports.
"And the other player who was Gonzalo Rodriguez was onside then he gave me the ball behind so I think it was allowed and it was okay.
"So I don't think it was offside, I think it was a goal."
The Uruguayan striker also resisted calls for the rules to be changed as he showed sympathy for match officials who have to implement the current law.
"It's not my job this is referee and linesman job," Forlan continued.
"I think we have to understand sometimes they make mistakes and I don't think they show any favour to any team they try their best and sometimes things go wrong."
Forlan also revealed he had snatched a few words with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson as the Red Devils manager was watching from the stands at Ibrox.
"We were talking a little bit," said Forlan. "He came to see the game so we were talking a little bit."
