Raul sees end for 'Galacticos'
Raul hopes the resignation of Florentino Perez will usher in a new era for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid striker Raul hopes the resignation of president Florentino Perez will finally bring to an end to the cult of the 'Galactico' which has threatened to consume the Santiago Bernabeu club.
Perez resigned from his position on Monday following a particularly tumultuous season but Real's talismanic striker believes it can signal a new dawn for the Liga giants.
The term 'Galactico' has been coined to describe the collection of superstars that had been acquired by Perez and Raul insists that transfer policy has had a detrimental impact on the club.
Raul hopes Real will be able to achieve a greater team ethic and ultimately gain respect as sportsmen rather than media luminaries.
"This word [Galactico] has caused the club more damage over the last few years than anything else," Raul said.
"I hope this word will go away now. I hope the people see us from now on as sportsmen and as professionals.
"We are representing an important club with millions of fans and will try to give our all for them."
Perez spent more than é¼400 million on the likes of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham during his six-year tenure.
However in recent seasons the club have failed to win the trophies expected of such an expensively-assembled side and Raul and Real now hope the resignation of Perez will usher in a more successful era.
